College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering Xiamen University

The College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering at Xiamen University was established in 1991, on the basis of the Chemistry Discipline. that was founded in 1921. Thanks to tremendous efforts from generations of prominent chemists, as represented by Jiaxi Lu, the former President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1981-1987), our College has been recognized as one of the leading chemistry institutions in China, frequently ranked within the top 5, nationally.

The college now consists of three major departments: Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Chemical Engineering. The College has particularly strong research programs in physical chemistry, inorganic/organic synthetic chemistry, and materials chemistry. Nowadays, there are 174 faculty members in the College, among whom 97 are full-time professors. Eight of them were elected as members of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. 18 young faculty members have obtained research funding support from the Distinguished Young Investigator Program granted by the National Science Foundation of China (NSFC), 8 have obtained research funding support from the National Excellent Young Science Foundation. In addition, there are 3 faculty members who were chiefs of the National Program on Key Basic Research Project (973 Program), and 2 faculty members who were chiefs of the National Key R&D Program of China.

The college has earned a global reputation for research activities. One faculty member is elected president of the International Electrochemistry Society. Two faculty members are members of the International Electrochemistry Society. Five faculty members are selected as members of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Many impressive accomplishments have been published in top journals, including Science, Nature, Nature Reviews Chemistry, Nature Reviews Materials, Nature Materials, Nature Chemistry, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Catalysis, and Nature Communications.

The college attaches great importance to education. Two National Centers have been established in our College by the NSF for undergraduate training in fundamental chemistry, including theory and experiment. In September 2018, almost 600 new students registered to study in bachelors, masters, and PhD programmes.

The College offers great platforms for researchers to carry out international research projects. The State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry for Solid Surfaces operated at our College has been ranked as one of the top laboratories in Chemistry and Chemical Engineering disciplines five times consecutively (1994, 1999, 2004, 2009 and 2014) over the past 25 years by the Ministry of Science & Technology of China. The Collaborative Innovation Center of Chemistry for Energy Materials (2011-iChEM) established in September of 2012 has got substantial synergies.

Currently, research in our college is moving into new interdisciplinary fields related to materials, nano-/bio-sciences, energy, and environmental science. The College aims to strengthen its interdisciplinary work in chemistry and chemical engineering, by promoting the integration of fundamental research and applications. Based on the efficient, coordinated development of Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and Chemical Engineering, the College is committed to building an innovative and competitive platform for students and teachers.
