Prof. Dr. Tatsuo Horiba, former vice chairman of Committee of Battery Technology, Electrochemical Society of Japan, is one of the most famous battery engineers and scientists in the world. As a senior researcher and department manager, he had worked in Hitachi Group of Japan from 1974 to 2011, including working in Hitachi Research Laboratory (1974-1995), Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co., Ltd.(1995-2004), Hitachi Vehicle Energy, Ltd,(2004-2009) and Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co., Ltd.(2009-2011). Prof. Dr. Horiba’s research interests focus on many kinds of electrochemical energy devices such as primary battery, secondary battery, and fuel cells. He has over 100 battery patents in the world and about 30 research papers in battery field. He is also one of the inventors of the lithium battery system for the first commercial HEV in the world.
In 2011, Dr. Horiba moved to Mie University of Japan as a distinguished professor of electrochemistry. Now he is a member of technical advisory committee of Li-EAD Project of the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO), Japan’s largest public R&D management organization, and a member of roadmap working group on lithium batteries of NEDO.
