The 13th International Conference on Advanced Vibrational Spectroscopy (ICAVS13) and the 5th International Conference on Enhanced Spectroscopies (ICES5) were successfully held at the Science and Art Center on Siming Campus of Xiamen University, from 30 November to 5 December 2025. The conference was jointly organized by the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering of Xiamen University and the State Key Laboratory of Physical Chemistry of Solid Surfaces.

ICAVS has a long history, with its origins tracing back to the International Conference on Fourier Transform Spectroscopy began in 1970. After merging with the International Conference on Advanced Infrared Spectroscopy in 2001, it adopted its current name and has since become one of the most influential series international conferences in the field of vibrational spectroscopy. ICES focuses on frontier topics such as surface-enhanced spectroscopy and nanospectroscopy. This is the first time that the two authoritative conference series, ICAVS and ICES, have been held together and hosted in China.

The conference attracted over 400 internationally renowned scholars from over 30 countries and regions, 253 of whom came outside mainland China, including those from Germany, Poland, South Korea, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, Australia, Singapore, and other countries. The conference provided an important platform for domestic researchers to present their most recent achievments, engage in face-to-face discussions with leading global experts, and enhance the international visibility of Chinese scholars in the field of vibrational spectroscopy.

The opening ceremony was chaired by Prof. Bin Ren, Conference Chair. He delivered welcoming address and briefly introduced the history and development of the Xiamen University and College of Chemical and Chemical Engineering. The conference offered rich scientific program. It continued the ICAVS tradition, featuring two plenary lectures each day. Ten world-leading spectroscopists, including Professors Hatice Altug, Malgorzata Baranska, Hyeonsik Cheong, Rainer Hillenbrand, Yi Luo, Boris Mizaikoff, Jürgen Popp, Tahei Tahara, Zhong-Qun Tian, and Xiaoliang Sunney Xie, delivered plenary presentations on frontier topics, such as enhanced infrared imaging, spectroscopic imaging, spectroscopy of two-dimensional materials, nano infrared techniques, artificial-intelligence-enabled spectroscopy, infrared sensing, clinical spectroscopic diagnostics, and ultrafast spectroscopy.

In addition, four parallel sessions were designed, with emphases on ICES Special Session for Enhanced Spectroscopy, Nonlinear Optics and Spectroscopic Theory, Imaging Methods and Biomedical Spectroscopy, and Materials, Catalysis, and Other Applications. Over the five-day scientific program, the conference featured 88 invited talks and 125 oral presentations, as well as 140 poster presentations and 19 flash talks, offering a systematic and comprehensive overview of the latest research progress and future development trends in vibrational and enhanced spectroscopies.

The closing ceremony was chaired by Prof. Hongfei Wang from Westlake University, the program Chair. He provided a thorough summary of the conference organization, academic highlights, and collaborative outcomes, and presented two major ICAVS awards: the ICAVS Award for Outstanding Achievements, conferred upon Prof. Sergei Kazarian from Imperial College London, and the ICAVS Young Scientist Award, granted to Dr. Kamila Kochan from Monash University. The conference also announced the recipients of the “Best Poster Award,” selected by the committee members. Eighteen young scholars from Poland, Japan, China, Germany, South Korea, Denmark, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, France, the United States, and Romania received the award. This award was jointly sponsored by the Coblentz Society and the journal Analytical Chemistry.

At the end, Prof. Young Mee Jung from Kangwon National University extended a warm invitation to all participants to the 14th ICAVS, to be taken place in 2027 on Jeju Island, South Korea.

Participants expressed their appreciation on the organization of the conference, impressively high quality service provided by the volunteers, and the top academic quality of the conference. In their email to conference organizer, there are some frequently used terms, such as “terrific,” “perfect organization,” “memorable conference” and “amazing” to describe their experience during the conference.

The conference received generous support from industry partners, including Photothermal Spectroscopy Corp., Renishaw, HORIBA, Edinburgh Instruments, Bruker, VibroniX, Oxford Instruments, Quantum Design and other contributing companies, as well as the journal Analytical Chemistry.
