报告摘要:
This lecture will examine the vital role of catalysis in driving the circular economy, with a special focus on biomass. It will introduce the importance of catalysis in biorefinery processes and highlight recent advances in RCF lignin-first biorefinery technology, including its technoeconomic analysis (TEA) and life cycle assessment (LCA). This cutting-edge technology enables the production of a wide range of unique lignin oils and pulp. The lecture will then turn to the upgrading of both lignin oil and pulp. In the case of pulp, we will explore the challenges and opportunities associated with utilizing RCF pulp for bioethanol production through saccharification and fermentation. Lignin oil will be fractionated and analyzed with advanced chromatographic techniques to uncover detailed insights into its molecular structure. This analysis has informed the development of novel separation strategies and upgrading methods aimed at transforming individual molecules and fractions into valuable chemicals and materials for diverse applications. Green chemistry principles will be applied throughout, with a particular emphasis on designing non-regrettable substitutes for chemicals of concern. In conclusion, this presentation will offer a comprehensive exploration of the complexities of catalysis in biomass recycling, providing innovative solutions to current challenges and promoting the transition to a more sustainable, circular economy.
报告人简介:
Professor Bert F. Sels is a distinguished full professor at KU Leuven and serves as the director of the CSCE research group. His current research centers on heterogeneous catalysis, with particular emphasis on zeolite-based systems and addressing key challenges in industrial organic and environmental catalysis. His work bridges fundamental science—including kinetics and active site characterization—with applied research focused on process upscaling. A central theme throughout his research is advancing carbon circularity through the utilization of renewable carbon sources such as biomass, carbon dioxide, and plastic waste.
Throughout his career, he has published over 400 peer-reviewed articles and holds more than 40 patents. Since 2021, he has been recognized as a Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate. In addition to his academic and research achievements, Professor Sels is actively involved in the scientific community. He is co-chair of the Catalysis Commission of the International Zeolite Association (IZA), co-founder of the European Research Institute of Catalysis (ERIC), a member of the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and a member of the Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium for Science and the Arts.
