报告摘要:

The University of Cape Town, in collaboration with Sasol Technology, has developed an in-situ/operando magnetometer, which allows to study ferromagnetic catalysts at industrial conditions of high temperature (>800°C) and high pressure (>50 bar). This unique set-up can be used to study phase changes (such as reduction, oxidation and carburization) as well as crystallite size changes. In certain cases even crystallite size distributions of the magnetic phase can be obtained. Importantly, while studying these changes, fully relevant kinetic data can be measured on this flow through fixed bed reactor system so that the catalyst performance can be directly linked to its current state. Examples of investigations conducted with the set-up, which inform catalyst and process design, will be presented and these include, inter alia:

• Crystallite size dependent oxidation of cobalt, iron and nickel CO hydrogenation catalysts.

• Sintering of a cobalt and nickel CO hydrogenation catalyst as function of process conditions.

• Role of carbides in cobalt based Fischer-Tropsch synthesis.

• Leaching of cobalt from Pt-Co fuel cell catalysts.

报告人简介:

Professor Claeys obtained his PhD with distinction in Fischer–Tropsch catalysis from the University of Karlsruhe, Germany, in 1997 before joining the Catalysis Institute at the University of Cape Town. There, he played a pivotal role in establishing a major research programme in Fischer–Tropsch catalysis—a technology that underpins South Africa's synthetic fuels and chemicals industry and is increasingly central to the production of sustainable fuels through Power-to-X (PtX) processes.

His research interests span Fischer–Tropsch catalysis, the synthesis and characterisation of nanomaterials for catalytic applications, and the development of advanced catalysts and novel instrumentation for studying catalysts under operando conditions. He has published extensively in these fields, is the inventor on numerous patents, and has been awarded an A-rating by the National Research Foundation (NRF) of South Africa, recognising him as a leading international researcher.

A significant proportion of Professor Claeys' research is conducted in close partnership with industry, most notably through a longstanding collaboration with Sasol R&D. He previously served as Director of the DSI–NRF Centre of Excellence in Catalysis (c*change), a large multidisciplinary virtual centre, where he also managed the Scientific Synthesis Gas Programme, including research on the catalytic valorisation of CO₂. He is currently involved in several major Power-to-Liquids (PtL) initiatives, including the BMFTR-funded CARE-O-SENE consortium and South Africa's national CoalCO₂-to-X flagship programme.

Professor Claeys is the founding Chairperson of the Syngas Convention, a triennial international conference on synthesis gas technologies held in Cape Town. He is also co-founder and director of three spin-off companies—Cape Catalytix, Lodestone Tech, and C STAR—which are commercialising specialised laboratory test equipment and innovative PtL technologies.
